Maaden Bauxite and Alumina Company (MBAC), a subsidiary of Maaden — one of the world’s fastest-growing mining companies — has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF.

The partnership will deliver renewable energy to the Al Baitha Bauxite Mine in Saudi Arabia, advancing the Kingdom’s clean energy goals.

Under the agreement, Emerge will develop a fully integrated solar energy project that combines an 8 MWp ground-mounted solar photovoltaic array with a 30 MWh battery energy storage system. This facility will ensure round-the-clock electricity supply while offsetting the intermittency of solar power.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate 17,300 MWh of electricity annually, enabling the mine to run almost entirely on renewable energy.

It will also help avoid approximately 13,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year—the equivalent of removing more than 3,000 cars from the road—supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 sustainability agenda.

Ali Al-Qahtani, Executive Vice-President of Maaden’s aluminum business, highlighted that the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to expanding renewable energy use across its operations, while creating value for surrounding communities.

Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chairman of Emerge and COO at Masdar, emphasized that the project demonstrates how Emerge provides cost-effective renewable energy solutions to help industries decarbonize and optimize their energy use.

Omar Aldaweesh, CEO KSA of EDF Group and board member of Emerge, added that the collaboration underscores the mining sector’s role in driving Saudi Arabia’s energy transition, showcasing how industrial growth and environmental responsibility can align.

Emerge will deliver a turnkey solution—covering financing, design, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance—making the project a landmark in sustainable mining practices within the Kingdom.
