The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched the ‘Mangroves Through Youth Lens’ initiative, a unique programme designed to merge environmental engagement with creative expression.

In collaboration with the Global Youth Program and Nikon Middle East, the initiative will take young participants on guided photo-walks across the UAE’s most iconic mangrove reserves throughout December.

The programme builds on the goals of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), co-founded by the UAE and Indonesia, which now counts over 45 member states committed to advancing mangrove restoration as a powerful nature-based climate solution.

The New Meaning of Sustainability: Beyond Buzzwords, Toward Balance

Strengthening the Mangrove Alliance for Climate

As part of its broader environmental strategy, MOCCAE seeks to amplify understanding of the UAE’s mangrove ecosystems—vital natural assets that provide:

  • High carbon sequestration capacity

  • Coastal protection

  • Critical habitats for biodiversity

The initiative encourages youth to explore these ecosystems firsthand and use visual storytelling to highlight their importance, helping shape the next generation of environmental ambassadors.

The Power of Photography in Environmental Advocacy

Hajar Bakhit Alketbi, Director of the Government Communication Department at MOCCAE, emphasized the initiative’s role in transforming environmental education.

“We believe in the power of photography to deepen environmental awareness and showcase the beauty of our natural surroundings. Through this initiative, we aim to empower young people to become true ambassadors of the UAE’s natural heritage.”

She added: “Images are among the most impactful mediums for conveying environmental messages. With Nikon Middle East as our partner, we look forward to powerful creative content that reflects the UAE’s environmental identity and continues the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in preserving nature.”

A Comprehensive Learning and Field Experience

The programme is open to youth aged 15–35 of all nationalities, offering a full educational journey that blends knowledge with hands-on practice:

  1. Environmental Awareness Workshop
Led by MOCCAE biodiversity experts, participants learn about the ecological role of mangroves and their contribution to climate and biodiversity resilience.

  2. Professional Photography Training
Nikon specialists from the Nikon Youth Programme conduct a workshop on wildlife photography techniques, using professional Nikon equipment.

  3. On-Site Photo-Walks
Participants embark on guided field tours through mangrove habitats, capturing the UAE’s diverse wildlife and landscapes through their lenses.

Weekend Photo-Walk Schedule Across Four Emirates

Morning tours (7:00–10:00 AM) will take place on the following dates:

  • Saturday, December 13 — Jubail Park, Abu Dhabi

  • Sunday, December 14 — Jabal Ali Sanctuary, Dubai

  • Saturday, December 20 — Al Zorah Nature Reserve, Ajman

  • Sunday, December 21 — Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre, Sharjah

Participant numbers are limited to 15–20 per tour to ensure high-quality training and personalized guidance.
