UAE Champions Global Water Security Push with Innovation and Sustainable Finance at the Core
As the world grapples with mounting water stress, the United Arab Emirates is positioning itself at the forefront of a transformative global movement—one that seeks to turn water challenges into opportunities for resilience, equality, and sustainable growth.
On the occasion of World Water Day, Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak underscored that technological innovation, sustainable financing, and cross-border partnerships are the three pillars essential to securing the world’s water future.
A Global Crisis Rooted in Inequality
The scale of the crisis is staggering—and deeply unequal.
More than 2.1 billion people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water near their homes. For millions, particularly women and girls, the burden is both physical and societal. Every day, they collectively spend nearly 250 million hours fetching water—time that could otherwise be invested in education, employment, or community development.
Over a billion women remain without safe water services, while hundreds of millions live in regions facing acute water stress. The theme of this year’s World Water Day—“Where water flows, equality grows”—captures a stark truth: access to water is inseparable from social and economic equity.
Innovation and Finance: The Path to Real Solutions
According to Dr. Al Dahak, addressing these challenges requires more than awareness—it demands action driven by innovation and funding.
The UAE is advancing solutions through cutting-edge technologies such as:
Advanced groundwater extraction systems
Large-scale desalination projects
Natural water purification innovations
Equally critical is the role of sustainable financing in scaling these solutions globally, ensuring that underserved communities gain reliable access to clean water.
The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative: Driving Global Impact
At the heart of the UAE’s international efforts lies the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative—a flagship programme aimed at tackling global water scarcity through innovation and collaboration.
Backed by a $150 million commitment, the initiative has already catalysed global interest, including the launch of the XPRIZE Water Scarcity Competition, which offers up to $119 million in prizes. The competition seeks breakthrough technologies to enhance seawater desalination efficiency while reducing operational costs.
Beyond innovation, the UAE is also addressing environmental degradation through the ‘Clean Rivers’ initiative, actively restoring water ecosystems in countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, while strengthening community resilience.
UAE Water Security Strategy 2036: A Blueprint for Sustainability
Domestically, the UAE is setting a benchmark through the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036—a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable water management.
Key targets include:
Reducing total water demand by 21%
Increasing reuse of treated water to 95%
Enhancing efficiency in consumption and distribution
Central to this strategy is the adoption of eco-friendly technologies, particularly reverse osmosis in desalination, which significantly lowers carbon emissions while improving efficiency.
The Water–Energy–Food Nexus: A Holistic Approach
The UAE’s strategy goes beyond water in isolation. It recognises the deep interdependence between water, energy, and food systems.
Efficient water use in agriculture, sustainable energy integration, and ecosystem preservation form a unified framework aimed at ensuring long-term global food and water security—while protecting natural habitats.
Global Partnerships and the Road to 2026
Strengthening international cooperation remains a cornerstone of the UAE’s approach. This vision was reinforced during the World Governments Summit 2026, where the ‘Sustainability Impact Forum’ was launched under the theme “Partnerships for Sustainable Water.”
Looking ahead, the UAE, in partnership with Senegal, is set to host the UN Water Conference 2026—a landmark event aimed at translating commitments into actionable outcomes.
The conference is expected to:
Accelerate global access to safe water
Mobilise investments in water infrastructure
Advance ecosystem protection and river restoration
A Defining Moment for Global Water Security
As the world stands at a critical juncture, the UAE’s message is both urgent and clear: water is not merely a resource under threat—it is a catalyst for peace, equity, and sustainable development.
By aligning innovation, finance, and global partnerships, the UAE is not just addressing a crisis—it is shaping a future where access to clean water becomes a universal reality rather than a privilege.
