MTF Releases New Guidelines to Enhance Safety for Wind-Assisted Ships
The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has unveiled a new set of guidelines aimed at strengthening safety management practices for ships using Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS).
The latest report provides a structured framework to help shipping companies design and implement effective Safety Management Systems (SMS) tailored to vessels equipped with wind-based technologies. It addresses the unique operational, technical, and organisational challenges associated with WAPS.
With growing interest in wind-assisted propulsion as a sustainable solution to cut fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, the industry is witnessing increased adoption of technologies such as rotor sails, suction sails, and wing sails. However, these modern innovations introduce new safety considerations that must be carefully integrated into existing systems. The MTF guidelines aim to bridge these gaps, enabling companies to strengthen SMS frameworks for both new and retrofitted vessels.
Developed collaboratively by MTF members with expertise in WAPS technologies and the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code), the guidelines offer practical, experience-based recommendations aligned with current industry standards. They highlight the need for structured risk assessments and outline key operational factors, including impacts on manoeuvrability, visibility, emergency response, and maintenance.
The report also stresses the importance of continuous learning as the technology evolves. Companies are encouraged to refine reporting systems to capture WAPS-specific incidents such as near misses and non-conformities, helping identify trends and improve procedures. In the absence of dedicated certifications, the guidelines recommend role-specific training focused on system operations, limitations, and emergency protocols.
By delivering clear and actionable insights, the MTF aims to support the safe integration of wind-assisted propulsion as the maritime sector advances towards decarbonisation.
Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Interim CEO Maritime at DNV, said: “As the industry's decarbonization efforts introduce new technologies and fuels, safety must remain the priority. These guidelines reflect the collective effort of MTF members and industry stakeholders in rising to that challenge.”
Lars Lippuner of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency added: “Wind assisted propulsion systems offer significant potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. These guidelines provide clear, practical recommendations to help companies manage these systems safely as part of the industry’s transition to a decarbonised future.”
