Farnek, the UAE-based smart and sustainable facilities management company, has been officially registered under the Evident Registry as an approved provider of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs), marking a major step in strengthening credible renewable electricity sourcing in the region.

In a complementary development, Farnek has also entered into an agreement with EKOenergy, the international renewable energy ecolabel. The EKOenergy label applies to eligible I-RECs that meet enhanced environmental and sustainability benchmarks and is a mandatory requirement for LEED Zero certification, offering organisations a high-integrity route to meet advanced green building and clean energy standards.

I-RECs are market-based instruments that certify the generation of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity from renewable sources. They enable organisations to transparently track and verify renewable electricity consumption, supporting both local and global clean energy development.

All I-REC procurement, documentation and project data are accessible via Emirates Carbon, Farnek’s recently launched free, open-access digital platform. The platform provides carbon footprint calculations, access to certified carbon credits, high-quality offset programmes and I-RECs, streamlining decarbonisation efforts for businesses of all sizes.

“Becoming an approved I-REC provider directly supports corporate decarbonisation pathways aligned with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy,” said Muna Al Nahdi, Director – Sustainability & Consultancy at Farnek.
“It provides a credible, internationally recognised mechanism to reduce Scope 2 emissions and helps organisations meet Scope 1 and 2 net-zero targets where renewable energy adoption is constrained by infrastructure or regulation. I-RECs also enhance transparency, traceability and audit-ready ESG reporting, reducing greenwashing risks.”

Farnek’s Evident Registry registration enables the issuance and supply of certified I-RECs and EKOenergy-labelled certificates. Through Emirates Carbon, organisations can access certificate traceability, automated Scope 2 emissions reduction calculations and seamless integration with CarbonTek, Farnek’s enterprise-grade platform for tracking Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions across operations and supply chains.

The platform prioritises UAE-based renewable energy sources in line with SBTi best practices, while also providing access to high-quality international I-RECs when local supply is limited. All certificates comply with global carbon accounting standards and UAE MRV frameworks.

Emirates Carbon supports renewable electricity sourcing at any scale—from small annual needs to large portfolios consuming thousands of megawatt-hours—enabling organisations to demonstrate genuine climate action through clean energy adoption rather than compensation mechanisms. I-RECs verify that claimed electricity consumption originates from certified renewable sources, meeting SBTi and GHG Protocol requirements.
