SICO, one of the first financial institutions in Bahrain, publishes a GHG report, calculating how much carbon the bank and its subsidiaries release on a daily basis.

According to the report, the total GHG emissions of SICO’s business from January 1 to December 31, 2021 were 571.962 metric tons (Mt) carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

A comprehensive view of the carbon footprint during the full reporting period quantified the total GHG emissions include direct emissions from controlled equipment and assets, emissions from purchased electricity, and selected categories that constitute indirect emissions.

Including business travel, employee commuting, and indirect effect of emissions of SICO staff who worked from home during part of the pandemic period.

Najla Al Shirawi, chief executive of SICO, said, “Publishing our first GHG emissions report is a crucial first step that we will use to measure and monitor SICO’s impact on the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

SICO is now carbon neutral after offsetting our emissions, and we plan on enhancing our focus on expanding on our environmentally conscious activities."

The study is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines for Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
