In the early days, the challenge with sustainability was about educating people that greenhouse gases are rising and climate change is actually occurring, said Karl W. Feilder, Regional Expert on Biofuels, Advisor on Corporate Net Zero Strategy, The Neutral Group.

But today, the real challenge is about helping people understand what they can do about it, he said.

In a conversation with Sustainability Middle East (SME), Mr Feilder said that the big challenge with sustainability today is, it is not quite understood that we need to focus on net-zero.

"That is a mathematical challenge involving real numbers and actually targeting on a zero. I have spent the last 15 years with large companies, learning lessons, showing them how they can make it to net zero," he said.

Mr Feilder added: "I moved here 14 years ago, and everybody thought I was crazy. Why would you want to come to the fossil fuel capital of the world. I said, because this is where we can make the change this is where people have visions, they have dreams and they execute.

"I am so glad that this 2023 is the Year of Sustainability."
