The Global Impact Coalition (GIC), a CEO-led collaborative platform dedicated to accelerating a circular, net-zero chemical value chain, has launched a pioneering research initiative with ETH Zurich and five GIC member companies: BASF, Clariant, Covestro, LyondellBasell, and SUEZ.
Transforming Waste into Value
The project focuses on direct conversion technologies that can turn complex waste streams into C2+ chemical compounds such as ethylene and propylene through gasification. These compounds are essential for plastics, detergents, paints, and textiles.
Direct conversion could provide a lower-emission, cost-effective alternative to fossil-based feedstocks, helping reduce virgin resource use and cut greenhouse gas emissions from chemical production.
Science Meets Industry
“Our collaboration with ETH Zurich scientists represents a significant step toward realizing a circular and net-zero chemical industry,” said Charlie Tan, CEO of GIC. “By combining cutting-edge research with industry expertise, we aim to explore scalable solutions that address both environmental and economic challenges.”
ETH Zurich researchers, led by Professor André Bardow, Chair of Energy and Process Systems Engineering, will conduct environmental and techno-economic assessments to evaluate the viability of direct conversion. Findings will guide proof-of-concept design and future pilot-scale efforts.
“The chemical industry must shift from fossil-based inputs to renewable and circular carbon sources. This collaboration explores how waste can become a feedstock—an important step toward operating within planetary boundaries,” Professor Bardow explained.
Closing the Loop in Chemicals
Industry leaders believe this effort could transform circularity in practice.
“With direct conversion technology, we can turn everyday waste into valuable chemical ingredients, reduce dependence on fossil resources, and close the loop in production,” said Richard Haldimann, Chief Strategy & Technology Officer at Clariant and Chairman of the GIC Executive Committee.
The research will address challenges such as handling heterogeneous waste and integrating new feedstocks into existing chemical value chains. By aligning scientific research with industrial application, the collaboration aims to chart a realistic path toward scalable waste-to-chemicals solutions.
GIC as Catalyst
As convener, GIC identified this research priority, facilitated dialogue between academia and industry, and coordinated company participation to ensure outcomes with real-world relevance.
